History
The company was established in 1980 in Johannesburg. In 2010, it acquired Port Elizabeth-based Guestro Forging and Machining from Dorbyl Limited, bringing with it half a century of forging and machining experience – plus, state-of-the-art machinery and technical skill, which has significantly broadened production facilities and overall capacity.
Today, SP Metal Forging offers a wide variety of forging and machining process capabilities, including extensive heat treatment, metallurgical and die making capabilities.
Our customer base includes a broad spectrum of major OEMs, tier one, tier two and tier three manufacturers, and commercial vehicle groups, globally.
WHEEL HUBS
SP Metal Forgings is a significant supplier of precision machined wheel hubs to Europe and North America, for consumption by OEMs in the USA. This incorporates supplying components forged from micro-alloys and bearing-grade steels, including turning, broaching, hobbing and drilling processes. SP Metal Forgings has been at the forefront of certain micro-alloy steel grade developments for wheel hubs, which have substantially improved the orbital rolling and bearing retention processes at its customers’ facilities.
DRIVETRAIN
SP Metal Forgings is a major supplier of driveline parts into the tier one market for original equipment use by leading OEMs. These products include stub yokes, tube yokes and flange yokes, forged and machined using purpose developed 5-axis machining centres to ensure perfect symmetry. Capabilities include all aspects of forging and machining, including spline rolling to deliver precision, finished parts in any configuration.
TRANSMISSION
SP Metal Forgings is the leading supplier of forged and machined transmission parts for tier one and original equipment use by South African OEMs.
These products include side shafts, axle housings, spindles, crown wheels and pinions. SP Metal Forgings has the unique capability to horizontally upset and finish forge axle shafts in two operations.
TOWING
SP Metal Forgings is a major supplier of original and aftermarket towing equipment into Europe. These products include flanged towballs, swan neck towballs, and demountable towballs – according to European OEM designs (including machining where required).
EXHAUST
SP Metal Forgings is a supplier of forged flanges into the catalytic converter industry. These products include forged exhaust flanges to OEM specifications.
