Associated Motors Ltd (AML), the leading General Motors East Africa Ltd. (GMEA) dealer network in Kenya, was established in July, 1964 as a small dealership in used cars and spares for various makes of vehicles. In 1966 AML was appointed the sole distributor of Isuzu products in Kenya. Associated Motors became Kenya's first assembler of Japanese vehicles in 1966 when it received a consignment of semi-knocked down (SKD) trucks. These were assembled under the supervision of technicians from Japan, who also trained local mechanics.
AML's first branch was opened in Mombasa (Jomo Kenyatta Avenue) in 1975, and a year later, opened its Eldoret branch (along the Eldoret-Kisumu road) with both branches having a showroom, spare parts and workshop facilities. These locations are very central and prime within each region where it covers. In 1986, the company established its full facility Nakuru branch. 1986 also saw the emergence of Auto Fabricators Ltd, a subsidiary company, building cargo and van bodies on truck chassis, to supply Associated Motors' customers with quality and sturdy vehicle bodies.
In keeping with this same customer oriented focus, a new full service branch was opened in Meru, in mid 1993, to support its growing customer base in the Mount Kenya region 1991 saw Associated Motors being appointed, by GMEA, distributors for Opel products through its branches across Kenya. This marked the first time Opel vehicles would actually be assembled in East Africa. During, 2003, Associated Motors, in a joint venture with Associated Auto Centre Ltd, (AAC), opened a new branch in Kisumu to serve the many Isuzu and Opel customers in that region Associated Motors Limited.
In 2004, the attractive and aggressively priced Chevrolet brand, with two saloon car models, the Aveo and the Optra, was launched in the Kenyan market with Associated Motors and Associated Auto Centre being appointed dealers to support GMEA in the distribution of these vehicles.
In 2007, the Hummer was introduced officially to Kenya by GMEA which as dealers also included it in our product line. 2007 also saw the introduction of the renown air-condition product (Sanden) and also the superior generator set models (Denyo) in a step towards diversification of AMG's product base. 2008 saw the birth of a sister company of Associated Motors Group called Auto Mart limited which will oversee all related products that are being introduced such as Sanden air conditions, Denyo Generators, Welding Machines and Compressors as well as LIFAN cars (Saloon & SUVs).
In August 2008, the LIFAN 1300CC saloon cars was launched for the first time in the East African Market by Auto Mart Limited (a member of Associated Motors Group) and the 2008 model retails at competitive price of less than Kshs. 1 million with 2 years warranty or 50,000 Kms (whichever comes first. Aggressive Expansion into East African markets of Tanzania and Uganda is already taking place under Auto Mart Limited with an aim to have branches in these countries by Mid 2009.
